Harrisonburg- In the final meet of the 2013 outdoor track & field season, five Pulaski County Lady Cougars arrived at the Virginia State Championships last weekend after fighting through back and hamstring injuries all season. Despite all the obstacles they had to hurdle, the feisty and determined PCHS student-athletes etched their names into the Virginia state history books by securing seven All-State titles.
Sarah Wright had the meet of her life as she earned state runner up in the shot put with a throw of 39’ 10 ¼”, a personal best by over two feet. She finished a mere 4 ¼” inches behind the state champion. Wright also beat her district/regional rival from Hidden Valley by just ½”. Wright plans on competing at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Track & Field Championships next weekend (June 14-16). The meet will be held on the campus of North Carolina A & T University in Greensboro. “Sarah finally got back to throwing her indoor distances when softball finally ended,” commented Head Coach Jamie McCarty. “Thetwo weeks she was able to practice just throwing enabled her to almost win the state championship.”
Sydney Anderson claimed three All-State awards by placing 3rd in the high jump (5’ 4”), 7th in the 400 meters (58.04 seconds) and 4th in the 1600 meter relay with teammates Erin Hamric, Julia Hager and Tamera Smith (4:05). “Our goal was to get Sydney to the state championships healthy,” said McCarty. “The 1600 meter relay team was seeded 10th in the state so they were put in the first heat with the slower teams. Not only did they win the heat, but they also ran fast enough to beat five teams from the fast heat, including rival Blacksburg. I’m very proud of all the athletes.”
