FOODS THAT ACTUALLY BURN FAT

Celery won't actually help you burn fat, but still can help you lose weight.

So-called "negative calorie foods" supposedly can burn fat off your body because the process of chewing and digesting negative calorie foods actually use up more calories than the amount of calories they contain. Unfortunately, according to the University of Arkansas, negative calorie foods that burn body fat do not exist, but these foods can still help you lose weight and achieve your fitness goals. Please consult your physician or a registered dietitian before making significant changes to your diet.

Busting the Myth

Celery, grapefruit, cabbage soup, coffee and pickles are among the most popular choices that are thought to be negative calorie foods that actually burn body fat. The University of Arkansas and the University of Miami in Ohio explain that "no foods can actually burn fat." Still, these foods are good choices to help you lose weight. Celery, grapefruit and cabbage soup can be healthful replacements for traditional high-fat snacking foods like potato chips or candy bars. By replacing or substituting low-calorie foods for high-calorie foods you will consume fewer net calories and begin to lose weight. These foods are also low in simple sugars. The College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University explains that when you consume sugar, your body releases insulin and insulin can promote fat storage.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are ideal low-calorie substitutes that can help you lose weight. Vegetables are particularly good because they are a good source of fiber and barely have any sugar. ACE recommends artichokes, spinach and bok choy as filling nutrient-dense vegetables. Blueberries, grapefruit, oranges and watermelon are recommended as healthful fruits.

Make sure you are either eating the vegetables raw or cooking them in small amounts healthful oils such as olive oil or grapeseed oil. Cooking or frying vegetables, or any food, in margarine or butter will dramatically increase the fat content. Likewise, make sure you are eating fresh fruit. Canned fruit is often soaked and preserved in a sugary corn syrup. Sugar helps canned fruit retain its shape according to Colorado State University. You can always wash off the syrup with water if you still wish to buy canned fruit.
